Lucian, the son of an earl, receives secret orders to look into the truth of the circumstances regarding the execution of Lady Charlotte, a noblewoman who married into a neighboring duchy. Charlotte was executed for the suspicious murder of her husband, Lord Garnier. Lucian believes that Charlotte was set up, so he goes to Lord Garnier's lands to contact his heir Emma, Garnier's daughter by his first wife.
