He is considered the godfather of Italian swimming, having served as head coach of the Italian national swimming team for 24 years. He led the team to seven Olympic Games and mentored numerous world champions, including Novella Caligaris. As an innovator, he introduced interval training and modern biomechanics to Italian swimming. He was not only a technical coach but also a father figure to many of his athletes.
