Her mother, Birgit, overwhelmed, places her in a municipal home for the blind, where Monika receives proper care and overcomes depression. With newfound strength, she seeks independence, which displeases Birgit. Monika enrols in a physical therapy apprenticeship, finding a new connection to the world and balancing disability with autonomy.
