Clyde's maternal grandparents were Hannah(Scott) and James C. Hammond; Great grandparents were Ursula (Barnett) and John Gore Hammond of Morgan County, early settlers coming from Maryland to Virginia, to Ohio. With Lea Penman, to whom he married in 1924, helped discover Marjorie Lord as a teen when Marjorie was a student at the school where they taught acting in New York city. He was a dapper silent screen character actor, often in roguish roles. At Paramount in the 1920's, he rejoined this studio in the 40's as a small part supporting player. During the intervening years, he had a busy career on Broadway playing men of means or influence.
