Matthew Poynter ACO SOC is a British camera and Steadicam operator whose career spans more than thirty years in the camera department, working in both feature films and high-end television drama. He began his professional trajectory as a documentary camera assistant before transitioning to scripted drama, gradually advancing from trainee to camera operator. Over the years, Poynter has developed a strong reputation for his proficiency with wheels, dollies, cranes, handheld camera work, and Steadicam systems—he is a trained Steadicam operator under the guidance of Paul Edwards ACO. He is a member of the Association of Camera Operators (ACO), the Society of Operating Cameramen (SOC), and the Guild of British Camera Technicians (GBCT). He shared a nomination for the 2020 GBCT Operators Award in the Television Drama category for his work on that series alongside James Layton. In addition to his on-set work, Poynter has mentored and taught at institutions such as the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and worked with initiatives such as Women Behind the Camera to help foster new talent.
