Peter Field is a second unit director of photography. He began his career in the visual effects department at Pinewood Studios, where he notably contributed to the production of Superman III. From those early days in optical and visual effects, he advanced into camera work both as an operator and as a second‑unit cinematographer, eventually building a reputation on large-scale international feature films and television productions. Over the years, he has accumulated over 50 film credits and around 18 television credits, working across main, second, splinter, VFX, action, and model/miniature units. His roles frequently include second‑unit Director of Photography or camera operator, particularly on action sequences and specialised shots. His cinematography collaborations span many high-profile films. Some examples include second‑unit work on Hot Fuzz (2007), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Doomsday (2008), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Spectre and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (both 2015), Jason Bourne (2016), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), Mortal Engines (2018), The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), The Warrior Queen of Jhansi (2019), Kingdoms of Fire (2019), The Letter to the King (2020), The Wilds (2020) and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power seasons 1 and 2 (2022–2023). In particular, his work as second‑unit Action/Drama Director of Photography on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power season 1 earned him the prestigious New Zealand Cinematographers Society Silver Award in May 2023. He was accorded full NZCS accreditation soon after. He then returned to shoot season 2 under the guidance of Vic Armstrong, his frequent collaborator, across a nine‑month UK shoot that concluded in mid‑2023. Beyond films and episodic TV, Peter also works on commercials and short films, and enjoys operating additional units, including model/miniature units, as well as splinter and VFX units. He has collaborated with top directors such as Tim Burton, Joe Johnston, Neil Marshall, John Madden, Edgar Wright, Paul Greengrass, Sam Mendes, and Kenneth Branagh, as well as with major studios including Disney, Warner Bros., Marvel, Paramount, Netflix, Amazon Studios, MGM, Sony, Working Title, and more. Colleagues widely praise him for his technical skills, creative eye, calm professionalism, and collaborative spirit—Vic Armstrong described him as "the consummate professional," while other collaborators called him "highly collaborative," "excited by action," and someone they would hire again without hesitation. He is also the son of renowned visual effects artist Roy Field and brother of Tim Field.
